Ate My Home WoRK 2006 Favourites
The Year's Favourite Pre-amble:
It's not often that I seek out a soapbox to offer my own opinions. Seeing
as some of us have this little tradition, I thought I'd go along with
it, and as in the past (I missed last year) have a little fun. The first
thing that will become evident is the sheer number of releases that I
have missed. I got many records this year, but it turns out that I was
catching up on what I missed in previous years (The Thanes "Evolver",
The Campus Tramps' "Curves Ahead", BBQ's "Tie Your Own
Noose"; Los Nuggets "Back to the Bone"; the list goes on...).
Therefore, I make do with a series of "Favourites
of 2006" list. Here it is for your enjoyment or edification. What
are the Kids are up to today? After they listen to their elder siblings
record collection (or their favourite radio show), they tune up their
guitars, tighten their drum skins, and create the records referred to
below.
SHOWS
Favourite Audiences:
CKCU Benefit at the Dominion Tavern Oct. 2006, featuring Steve Fai, Lefty
McRighty & the Boxcar Cadavers, The David Picco Band, and an audience
who gives a damn about their Community Radio Station.
Favourite Elvis Sighting:
Jon Spencer (Heavy Trash) headlining for the Sadies at Babylon. What a
showman.
Loudest Show:
Muffler Crunch. Never thought an acoustic guitar could do that.
Coolest Venue:
Birdman Sound Record Store "Four 'n' Giv'r Saturday Matinee Performance".
Favourite Duet:
King Khan & BBQ "What's For Dinner" In the Red Rcds.
Runner-up duet are the backing vocals between Patrick & Mark of the
Solid Senders (show at Irene's is the one that comes to mind).
Favourite Debut Live Show:
The Solid Senders, Irene's Pub. M.C. has the voice, theatrics, and the
energy to send you. If you don't believe me, ask Big Mama Thornton. She'll
tell you go hear her for yourself.
Favourite Live Show:
The Nymphets closing their set at Irene's Pub with "Kick Out the
Jams".
Favourite Outdoor show 2006:
Four 'n' Giv'r Show in Cantley was fun, even if just for playing outdoors
at night.
Third Annual Outta-wais Award Presented to Ottawa's furthest-out
performers:
The board of S.O.C.A.N. You are so far out of touch with reality.
For everyone else, educate yourself about Tariff 22.
This endeavor from the board of SOCAN will harm Canadian Community Radio
Stations. It does much for the top earners of music royalties, and little
(if anything) for the musicians who starve for their art.
RADIO:
Favourite Radio Documentary:
"The End of Food" produced by Jacky T. Short, concise, well
presented, and relevant.
Favourite Radio Appearances:
Bill Guerrero's birdman sound adverts on CKCU. Talk about enthusiasm!
This is the way advertising ought to be – fun, informative, and
more fun. The first advertising firm to figure this out will blow their
competition away. Some of us at CKCU FM have known this all along.
Favourite CKCU DJ Debut:
Aurele gets many points for enthusiasm and broad tastes in music. Aurele's
solo debut was such a chaotic program that I was on the edge of my seat
the entire time, wondering if/when it was all going to spin out of control.
Much consideration has gone into this one and as a self imposed print
deadline draws near, I just can't find an answer.
MERCH:
Favourite T-Shirts:
Richard Monette's Do It Yourself Silkscreen T-shirt for the funding drive
edition of his own "Multiple Personality Discography" radio
show. What a great Giveaway.
Favourite Poster:
Aardvark wields a matchless pen. However, I have to give the award to
Dave Faught for the Blackball/Muffler Crunch poster if only for it's SIZE.
If only they had time to plaster those on the postboards of Ottawa...
Favourite Sticker:
Hmmmm...I'll have to double check my guitar case for this one...
Favourite Buttons:
Centretown Wilderness Club "Owl."
THE BUSINESS:
Coolest Record Label Revival:
I thought Magwheel records was gone. With the new David Picco Band release,
this cool indie with a long history of great releases has new life.
Coolest Record Deal dropout in Ottawa:
The Weapons of Mass Seduction "Desperate Men & The Women Who
Love Them."
Previously on Music For Cats Rcds, they have taken on the world on their
own with their second full-length being an independent release. The Beast
of Rock and Roll cannot be tamed!
Coolest Imminent Release Rumor:
The promise from Karen Cat the the next "Dirtbombs" single will
be on Music For Cats Rcds.
Coolest Sounding Recording Session:
Nina Nastasia "On Leaving", Fatcat Rcds.
As with previous releases, the natural sounds of the studio are captured,
such as creaking chairs and running water. Steve Albini's presence is
less obvious than with Nina's previous records. Instead of the soaring
guitar and densely packed string arrangements, this record features space
and distance – leaving plenty of room for Nina's voice, guitar playing,
and lyrics. Very subtle.
Favourite CD Releases:
Angela Desveaux "Wandering Eyes" – Sweet voice and excellent
songs.
Trevor Alguire "As Of Yesterday". I just like the songs.
Muffler Crunch "Sparky's Revenge" Sheer noise, containing songs.
Sunday Sinners "Sweet Jam" – Cool to hear these sounds
– wish there was more...
RECORDS:
Most Historic Release:
Compilation "Someone To Share My Life With" Beautiful Music
Records of Ottawa.
I still can't believe someone in Ottawa is behind this project. It seems
to be the sort of thing you'd expect to hear about happening in NewYork
or Paris. Is it three down, seven to go? Is this release series featuring
covers of The Television Personalities historic, or epic? Is it ever going
to end? Was the rendition of "If I Could Write Poetry" contributed
by Nikki Sudden the last item he recorded? Something to ponder...In the
meantime, go out and get their latest offering of pop sounds that are
just too good to miss.
Favourite Packidging:
Nina Nastasia "On Leaving" Fatcat Rcds. As much a work of art
as the music and singing itself. Wanted to frame and hang it on the wall.
Favourite Liner Notes:
Deadly Snakes "A Bird in the Hand Is Worthless" In the Red Rcds.
(More on this later).
Favourite Color Vinyl:
The Ettes "Shake The Dust" Sympathy For the Record Industry.
Clear Dark Blue.
The Marked Men "Fix My Brain" Swami Rcds. Clear with blue or
green tint depending on the light.
Favourite Soundtrack:
The Sadies "Tales Of The Rat-Fink" Yep Rock Rcds.
A welcome foil for their "commercial" release earlier in the
year. If anyone is going to become a superstar in Canada (or around the
world), I'm rootin' for The Sadies. FLIES!
Favourite 45 RPM:
The 5 Torquays "There She Walks" - Re-released on 10" comp."
Mas Rock & Roll" Electro Harmonix Rcds. (More later).
Begs the question "Where's the B-Side?!?!"
Favourite Double 10" record:
Various Artists "Mas Rock & Roll" Electro Harmonix Rcds.
Wow! Just when I was beginning to wonder when the re-issues would run
out of something new, we discover a new continent of music history to
tap. This release alone provides incentive for the serious collectors
to buy a new house (with wall to wall shelves) in anticipation of material
yet to be re-discovered from Mexico, South America, Spain...where does
it all end?
Favourite 12" Double LP:
The Deadly Snakes "A Bird In the Hand Is Worthless" In The Red
Rcds.
Polaris award nominees? Give me some relevance. This is thee Canadian
release of the year. No one else is performing with a set list that has
this much depth, taps into so many different influences, and remains consistently
top notch. It doesn't stop there. Packaging is informative and entertaining.
Live show is energetic and engages the audience. The Deadly Snakes are
everything a great band ought to be. AND to top it all off, the band spins
off projects that sound different from the source. What I personally find
fun with this record is playing it back to back with the first L.P. "Love
Undone." Despite starting out good, they have gotten a lot better.
(and are now defunct...Ed.)
Favourite 12" Vinyl Record Releases:
The Canary Sect "Shake It But Don't Break It" Screaming Apple
Rcds.
I knew what I was in for the moment I saw it – umpteen rotations
later, I'm still hearing new fun hidden in the grooves. Leaves me speechless,
so all I will say is take this one to your next dance party, and get everyone
shimmying and shaking. Produced by Dr. "Explosion" Jorge Munoz-Cobo.
This record is Cool Cool Cool!
The Wildebeests "Annie Get Your Gnu" Screaming
Apple Rcds.
Och! Loads o' fun fr' th' lairds a' boss beat, I cannah fin' a bettah
covah awf "I Did Ye Naw Wrong,"; nora no betta reckid fro' th'
brogue n' paisley end awf th' tinpot island. Mah fun tha' blowin' yer
pipes after a hearty suppah awf stirrabout.
The Black Hollies "Crimson Reflections" Ernest
Jennings/Telstar Rcds.
A slick recording influenced by The Yardbirds, British accents, used records,
and Old Speckled Hen. It howls, cries, whispers, and drives. Always leave
the audience wanting more is what I think after the stylus hits the inner
groove on this one.
The Rippers "Tales Full Of Black Soot" Screaming
Apple Rcds.
Aptly named 3rd Lp (that I'm aware of) from this wild Italian group of
knife swingers. Could have been titled "tales full of black snot".
Humor is a great thing, but sneer helps one withstand the onslaught of
stupidity that life sometimes dishes out. If you suffer from too much
inferiority, you need attitude. This record has got it! Includes a wild
version of The Troggs "From Home".
2007's Watch Out For's:
The Solid Senders & M.C.'s voice; Fourn'Giv'rs next kick at the reel
can; The Def Peds...
Wannasee's, Wannahave's, and Gimme Gimme's for 2007:
The b-side from the 5 Torquays single; The Orange Alabaster Mushroom (the
five piece, if you please; OR some of those songs that were never recorded
for the Compendium of Space & Time); Dead Moon at any venue that I
can walk to; Dr. Explosion anywhere in this end of Canada (I'll walk if
I have to); a plane ticket the Dirty Water Club; disgrace and de-patriation
for the board of SOCAN...
Will miss ya in 2007:
Syd Barrett. The first L.P. and singles from his band are near the top
of my list of all-time favourites for sounds, lyrics, and feel. As evidenced
by the group name, Syd was heavily influenced by the Blues. Instead of
relying on the Blues for a foundation, he applied the mood and spirit
of the Blues. The result is like neither the garage bands who came before,
nor the psychedelic groups that came after.
Effects are often associated with psychedelic music, but what effects
are heard on the early singles and Piper? A lot of echo, a bit of fuzz,
maybe a wah wah in "Apples & Oranges", and some kind of
a duck toy at the end of "Bike". The only other "effect"
seems to my ears as much the instrumentation as studio trickery. In some
cases, the effects are simply a result of the instruments being played
in unusual ways (ever hold an amplified hollow body guitar up to the back
of a Farfisa? Turn them on and check it out...). Instead of relying on
effects for their own sake, the sounds support the music and describe
the story.
Lyrically, Syd displayed a variety of styles - story telling (The Gnome),
recitation (Chapter 24), dialogue (Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk),
& character sketches (The Scarecrow). Many reviewers have made much
of the nonsensical lyrics. As in James Joyce' "Finnegan's Wake"
and Gaelic poetry, the lyrics are meant to be experienced by hearing the
art out loud - as opposed to being read silently and understood literally.
The words are chosen for their sounds (and the
moods these sounds invoke).
A listen to the re-issue of "Piper at the Gates of Dawn" reveals
the individual players pushing the limits of their abilities - the jazz
flourishes and tribal pounding of the drums; the organ providing layers
of sonic backdrop and flourishes ranging from baroque to eastern drone
to rock mayhem (here's proof that the Farfisa's sonic
versatility beats that of the Hammond); and the range of bass guitar styles
(from the melodic walking line of "The Gnome", to the primal
thump of "Take Up Thy Stethoscope"). The manner in which all
four perform describes fear, fury, delicacy, and humor.
What brought out these moods in the group during these sessions? Without
knowing the entire story, I'll guess they were either "going for
it" (and having "made it", their subsequent recordings
lacked the desperation and ingenuity); or perhaps Syd – the band
leader - was able to exert a strong presence in the studio that brought
out the best in the other three.
The world of music was given a great gift in 1967. With only one record
and a couple of singles, (I have difficulty considering Syd's solo records
as finished works), he has influenced both the psychedelic and garage
band styles. His like will not be there again.

Toms list of 10 notable musically related things in 06.
1. Simultaneously
a high and low point of 06 - the low being the execrable Danny Michel
joining the brilliant Alejandro Escovedo on stage @ Bluesfest - the simultaneous
high being pissing off Joe Reilly because I was screaming "You're
shit" as Mr. Michel took the stage. Joe, go have a fair trade coffee,
pronounce Kyoto and listen to 54-40.
2. The 15th
Annivesary of Birdman Sound. In this era when Wal Mart is the biggest
retailer of recorded "music" in Canada, we in Ottawa are uniquelypriveleged
to have this store, where we shop, talk & laugh. Cheers to John, Dave
& Carol, I sincerely hope there are 15 more in our future.
3. The return
of Bob Whitmore as the host of "Bob Ate My Homework". I like
Bill Bombshell, but I adore Bob Whitmore.
4. Howe
Gelb, Sno Angel Like You, how cool is quoting the late Dr. Gene Scott?
5. Fiftymen
Set @ Birdman Party - a throwback to the early days of Fiftymen - Uncle
Tupelo & Replacements covers, old school cow punk. Cool if you're
an old fuck which I most certainly am.
6. Angela
Desveaux @ Zaphods, I'm a sucker for this alt country stuff.
7. The new
Prime Minister (unlike the previous one) doesn't give a shit what Bono
thinks. (Neither do I).
8. John
Westhaver's call in to "Both Kinds of Music", I laughed out
loud, best call in I have ever heard.
9. Lone
Pig - "The Singing Dirty Doctor" performs at Liquor Pig Fest
06 after his 05 set was cancelled due to rain. Kington Ontario's best
songwriter, Gord Downie is nowhere near clever enough to rhyme "hard
on"
with "Darvon".
10. Balding
Dick Alta Vista's "Third Kind of Music", the world needs more
Dick.
(speaking
of which....)
