Most impressive show:
Ghost (from Japan) played at Spaceland (Silverlake, CA) in October. I thought it was going to be psychedelic and folksy. Instead, I got an aural acupuncture that left me deaf for a fucking week. Two encores and then city noise by-laws were enforced.

JIM BRYSON

As a year end list, I thought I would just write down, in no particular order, records and events in 2004 that I really enjoyed. Just a partial list really ‘cause it was what immediately came to mind.

----------------------------------------------------------

Dick Altavista's Top 16...Here it is: My top 16. I've included a picture of the almost legend that is Dick Altavista with Nora O'Connor who gets the nod as my favourite record of the year, and not because she agreed to wear the Stumbler shirt!!

The Volebeats Country Favorites (Rainbow Quartz)
As a live band the Volebeats are somewhat of a bore but this record is sublime. Matthew Smith is a great country guitar player and Jeff Oakes is a superior country vocalist. Killer originals and inspired covers!

Trailer Bride Hope Is a Thing With Feathers (Bloodshot)
For some reason I gave up on Trailer Bride when the second album didn’t get me as excited as the first one back in ’97. This record set me back on track. Melissa Swingle sings like an angel, well a gothic angel from the deep south. The band swings and sways. Find yourself a hammock and a cold beer.

Thee Shams Please Yourself (Fat Possum)
Thee Shams are a great live band. This record is a great studio record. A must have.

The Chickens Bring It On (Rubber Road Records)
As UIC they were Canadian punk icons, as the Chickens they continue to rock It was their kick-ass cover of the Steve Earle tune Feel Alright that prompted me to pick up the record. Guess what the eleven other songs are even better. I will not miss any future Chickens show and neither should you!

Good To Go Bar-B-Que (Independent)
I’d seen Good-2-Go live a few years ago and thought they were competent so this record took me by surprise. Straightforward rawk music for ten tracks and then the country-ish Prarie Express makes you think a new cd has started. Hats off to Maureen Hogan for killer vocals and boots!

Greenfield Main Barnburners & Heartchurners (Kelp)
The addition of John Higney, Jr. on guitar has changed Greenfield Main into a rockin’ country combo. The songwriting is great as always. My favourite track is the duet between Jon Bartlett and my favourite local country singer Casey Comeau on Buck Owens’ I’ll Take a Chance.

Denise James It’s Not Enough To Love (Rainbow Quartz)
An awesome voice and a killer band. Pop music at it’s finest.

Nora O’Connor Til the Dawn (Bloodshot)
I thought Denise James had recorded the best female vocal record of the year, then Nora’s first solo album showed up. A former guitar player with The Blacks this album shocked me with it’s subtlety. I expected drunken wailing and raucous playing; instead slow languid songs with a sparse country feel came flowing from the speakers. The singing isn’t pretty it’s gorgeous, soulful and timeless.

Fortunate Sons Burned Again(High Society International)
Recorded in Detroit by Jeff Meier in one weekend!! A scorching punk record featuring at least three killer tunes: Split Shift Heartattack, Liquor Store and my favourite Mother Fucker In Law.

Weapons Of Mass Seduction Thank You For Your Daughters(Music For Cats Records)
The Weapons sport one of the best names ever, and the music lives up to the name. Loud, fast, short & catchy!

Reigning Sound Too Much Guitar (In The Red)
Greg Cartwright is back with another killer record. Too much guitar? I think not. A band that can burn a slow groove or rawk till your ears ring. Worth the mouth full of hair(and ringing sound in my ears) in the mosh pit at Beerland, Austin Tx.

The Sonny Best Band The Sonny Best Band (independent)
My favourite “Hard Country” record of the year. Tear in your beer songs with killer guitar licks, weeping steel guitar and singing that is both gritty(Billy Kroon) and seductive(Angela Desvaux). After hearing this record I’m really pissed that the steel guitar broke at Bluesfest.

Carolyn Mark & The New Best Friends The Pros And Cons Of Collaboration (Mint Records)
I had to buy this because Carolyn covers my favourite song: Jr. Gone Wild’s Slept all Afternoon. Much to my surprise the whole record started to grow on me. If you drink you will enjoy this record, unless of course you are a man who drinks white wine.

Eagles Of Death Metal Peace Love & Death Metal (Antacid Audio)
Hyper catchy. Full throtle guitar and rock solid back beat turn this into a new genre: the grammy for HARD POP goes to….

Holly Golightly Slowly But Surely (Damaged Goods)
I already have 7(just counted to make sure) Holly Golightly records so how do you justify yet another? Well every one prior to this is excellent. About twenty seconds into this one her voice had seduced me again. The band is superb. The “Toe-Rag” sound is evident. The songs are all great. The really good news: there’s still some of her records I don’t yet own.

Mr. Airplane Man C’MON D.J.(Sympathy For the Record Industry)
Yet another killer album from Mr. Airplane Man.

Woody's (Whelan) Top 10 of 2004:

1) Hot Snakes "Audit in Process" Swami.
These ex-Drive Like Jehu guys just keep getting better with every record.
2) The Bronx "S/T" White Drugs
Imagine Poison Idea and Minor Threat rolled into one. Its sorta like that and ROCKS!
3) Sun Kil Moon "Ghosts of the Great Highway" Jetset
4) Old Canes "Early Morning Hyms" Second Nature.
Appleseed Cast frontman's country side project. A beautiful record.
5) Volcano I'm Still Excited "S/T" Polyvinyl.
So damn catchy.
6) Drive By Truckers "The Dirty South" New West.
7) Despistado "Emergency Response" Jade Tree.
8) Joel RL Phelps "Customs" double CD Money Shot.
9) Camper Van Beethovan "New Roman Times" Pitch a Tent.
10) Graig Markel "Tall Tales on Tape" Recovery/Sonic Boom.
"The Year 3000" is one of the best songs of the year.

Some other fine fine releases:
Mission of Burma "On Off On" Matador, Walkmen "Bows and Arrows "Record Collection, Gris Gris "S/T" Birdman, Twilight Singers "She Loves You" Birdman, Paul Westerberg "Folker" Vagrant, Matt Pond "4 Songs", Comets on Fire "Blue Cathredral" Sub Pop, Alexisonfire "Watchout" Distort, Division of Laura Lee "Das Not Compute", Hives "Tyrannosaurus Rex" Polydor.

Worst Album of Year: Wilco "A Ghost". Mr. Tweedy sounds like he popped one too many pills, and then decided to record this thing in a white, icy, empty room. 2 bad albums in a row, with Mr. Jim O'Rouke behind the board. Coincidence?

My favorite shows:
1) The Bronx w/Planes Mistaken For Stars @ Rockit July 27th
2) Hotsnakes w/PCP Gangbang @ Lee's Palace Nov. 8th
3) Sun Kil Moon @ Horseshoe Jan. 30th
4) Walkmen @ Lee's Palace Aug. 5th
5) Camper Van Beethoven @ Lee's Palace Oct. 21st
6) Mission of Burma @ Lee's Palace Oct. 22nd
7) Drive By Truckers @ Horseshoe Sept. 11th
8) Braid reunion show @ Kathredral June 1st
9) Gris Gris @ Silver Dollar Sept. 7th
10) Stiff Little Fingers @ Lee's Palace August 22nd

Worst show of the year: Songs Ohio @ Horseshoe on Oct. 2nd. Still love that last record they did, but this show was just plain off. Jason Molinda was annoying, played the songs just left of the dial enough to kill them, and stayed onstage way too long.
