Mat Moutard's Top Picks of 2002

Best Release, 2002

Gluecifer - Basement Apes (Steamhammer 2002)

Hands down the best release of the year goes to Oslo's undisputed Kings of Rock. While the masses doze, Gluecifer is not-so-quietly redefining the realm of aural pleasure. Basement Apes is an eclectic mix of angry, bass-driven, ass-kicking rock and roll dedicated to the end of easy living, and ominous post-new wave melodic meanderings promising death to little men with annoying attitudes. I listen to this LP everyday, and I still can't get enough! Kudos to Steamhammer for a beautiful double 10” gatefold package!

RICHARD PARKS PICKS A PACK OF PERFECT PLATTERS.......for 2002

Fiftymen - After Darkfall indie
(..and I thought the CDR was great, who knew how good it could get!)

The Paybacks - Knock Loud  Get Hip
(Great singer, great songs, solid band & attitude, attitude, attitude)

The Glen Nevous Retraction - Sell out Slow Slag-O-Matic
(You don't need a full band to rock when your songs are this good)

The Paybacks
Reigning Sound - Time Bomb High School In The Red
(This one makes the list but I'd should come clean and state that it makes it only because I can't include "Break Up Break Down", "Bad Mood Rising" by the Tearjerkers and The Cool Jerks' "Cleaned A Lot Of Plates In Memphis" all of which I bought this year but I think were released earlier. All are as good as Time Bomb High school. Thanks to John for pulling my head out of my ass and turning me onto to the Jack/Greg/Oblivians thing!)

Come Ons - Hip Check   SFTRI
(The organ playing makes this one, a record that I'm allowed to play anytime as my wife loves it too)

Von Bondies - Lack Of Communication  SFTRI
(Great record, great live show)

Mark Ripp & the Confessors - Minor Miracle indie
(Pop perfection? a great return to form from ex-Bel-Vistas frontman. A great voice singing well crafted songs)

Spencer P. Jones feat. Cow Penalty - The Lost Anxiety Tapes Spooky
(His week is better than my year!)

Kathleen Edwards - Failer  indie
(What is going on at Little Bullhorn? The third record on my list that Mr. Draves had a hand in. Jim Bryson's guitar playing is top notch and Kathleen's songwriting just gets better and better)

Ko & the Knockouts S/T  SFTRI
(Another record that gets played, and gets turned up, even with the whole family around. Detroit pop music capital of the world!)

My favourite reissues I bought this year:

Nomads - Showdown (1981-1993)Dusty Springfield
(2 CDs worth of stuff and not a bad song. An impressive feat.)

Alexander Spence - Oar
(There is a thin line between genius and craziness. this one is genius.)

Dusty Springfield - Dusty in Memphis
(Dusty was doing the Kelly Hogan thing when Kelly was still in diapers. There are fifteen bonus tracks, feel free to ignore them. The first 12 songs are sublime!)

Heather’s 2002 Alphabet (essential units in no order of importance)
Hosts "ROCK THE BOAT" Wednesdays 3:30 to 5PM on CKCU FM

A. Mr. Airplane Man – Moanin  SFTRI
It’s been a long time since a tune has given me the coveted shivery goosebumps.  (Sun Sinkin Low)  Thanks sexy blues ladies!Mr. Airplane Man

B. My Morning Jacket/Songs Ohia – split EP  Jade Tree
I had to hear it every other day for three weeks, and we must look back to my obsession in 2001 with the Amboy Dukes compilation to top its presence in my CD player.  (very syroppy, embarrassed to love it)

C. V/A - Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit  SFTRI
The Paybacks (deserve to be on this list alone), Ko and the Knockouts, the Come Ons, the Von Bondies, even the Dirtbombs and the ol’ White Stripes (and more!!).  I could only keep up with a portion of the Detroit releases this year so this comp. is essential if you suffer the same relative retardation as me.

D. The Lord High Fixers – The Beginning of the End… the End of the Beginning  In The Red

E. Dead Meadow –  Got Live If You Want It!  Bomp!

F. 35007 – Liquid  Stickman

G. Hacksaw – Turned Up Way Down Deranged
dudes.  you guys rock.  why 'ga break up.  Come back so we can see your cute sweaty faces.

H. Blind Dog – The Last Adventures of Captain Dog  People Like You

I. Weird War – s/t  Drag City
Neil Hagerty plus The Make Up’s Ian Svenonius and Michelle Mae!!   This is a fun album.

J. Sugar Shack – Spinning Wheel  Estrus
gotta still buy punk rock n roll albums!  Demanded to be re-played.  I abided.

K. Entombed – Morning Star  Music For Nations
Metal lives!  Get away from the crowd at the x-mas gathering, find a CD player and play this.  Even if you can’t play it really loud.  It will help you.

L. Sonic Assassin – State is Enemy, Forever!  Freakshow

M. Orquesta Del Desierto – s/t  Meteor City

N. Werbo – Welcome To Japan
I was just as happy not to like Werbo after their sandwich eatin’ feedback makin’ stereo shoulderin’ antics a couple years ago.  But no such luck.  I like em anyway.  This is really well done.

O. Bratmobile – Girls Get Busy!  Lookout

P. The Briefs – singles  Dirtnap
continuing from last years swell album (Hit After Hit).  LIKE A HEARTATTACK!!!

Q. Motorpsycho – It’s A Love Cult  Stickman
Going for a wider-scoped sense of these guys, this year I searched out many Motorpsycho albums back to ‘92, plus scored a stack of 10 inches…  This one’s super fine but I didn’t listen to it as much as a couple of the other ones.  So am I saying you can overlook this album if ya already have a Motorpsycho?  I’m saying don’t overlook Motorpsycho!

R. The Masonics –  The Masonic Machine Turns On You  Vinyl Japan

S. Le Nombre – s/t Blow The Fuse
J’aime le rock and roll toujours!  All these songs are hot stuff, just like the dudes who make them.

T. Cool Jerks – Cleaned Alot of Plates In Memphis SFTRI

U. Glen Nevous Retraction – Sell Out Slow Slag-O-Matic

V. The Launderettes – Shaken and Disturbed Big Dipper

W. Some LIVE highlights:  The Von Bondies, Andrew Vincent and his Pirates, The Sights, Le Nombre, Jay Munly, Golden Famile, New Bomb Turks (Toronto)

A few exceptions for delays in my randomly finding out about the following albums:

X. Green Machine - The Earth Beater (Japan 2001)
Stoner goes insane in Japan.  These lyrics are awesome nonsensical utterances.  Demotalization!  Heavy.

Y. King Khan and His Shrines – Three Hairs and You're Mine  (Canada 2001)
Woohoo!  A fun treat.  A “canadian content” god-send.

Z. King Brothers – s/t (Japan 2001)

PETER TOMS (Music enthusiast extraordinaire)

1. Everything Stumblers
2. The debut of Holy Hell August 10 @ “The Charisma Café”. Bob Whitmore is 2002's best new local frontman, and Heather Osborn hits it hard.
3. Ottawa’s newest supergroup, as yet unnamed?, debuts November 30 at “The Dom”. John Westhaver w/ Glen Nevous Retraction.
4. Friday Morning Cartunes expands 1 hr.The Glen Nevous Retraction
5. The Oscar for best performance by a hairdo goes to: Jeff Tweedy in “I am trying to break your heart”. Poor Jeff. He conveys the strain, emotional turmoil and anxiety involved in making a record, firing a bandmate and taking hundreds of thousands of dollars of corporate money via his laughably self conscious unkempt hair. But, I loved the performances and the record.
6. The return of Alan Wigney’s column. Our best local music writer is back in “The Ottawa Sun”. And for those of you who are too pompous for “The Sun”, fuck off and read Lynn Saxberg.
7. Fiftymen - “After Darkfall”. A band fulfilling the promise I heard and witnessed the first time I saw them, opening up for “The Cowslingers” w “The Phantom Shifters” at The Dom. What year and how many joints ago was that?
8. The Glen Nevous Retraction - “Sell out Slow”. (Is it too late for Chris to “Sell out young?”) I can’t stop listening to it.
9. Reigning Sound - “Time Bomb High School”. Stopped listening to it, but it took a lot of spins.
10. Jim Bryson’s acoustic performance at Bluesfest. Only acoustic performance I have witnessed by our local hero. Mr. Bryson is as good or better unplugged, and the between song banter with the audience was laugh out loud funny. This day could have been the highlight of my musical year 2002, as longtime favourite Lucinda Williams played later that evening. I attended, but red wine, beer, Jack Daniels & marijuana exacted quite a toll on my recollection of her performance.
11. Paul Westerberg’s encore at The Phoenix in Toronto Aug. 02. “The Regular”, “Swinging Party” & “If Only You Were Lonely”. Great nostalgia. (Enough to make up for the Burl Ives cover of “Mr. Rabbit” earlier in the evening. Sing that shit with your kid at home. I don’t give a fuck.)

Bob & Julia's top 10 live shows of the year - the number one reason to stay in Ottawa.

Link Wray - How this show came about and why. Fit nicely with the surf set I started airing on the show a few weeks previously. Jenn Priest gave the performance good praise. If Dick D. is the king of the surf guitar then Link is the guitar chord ripper!

2 - Munly. Words do not do justice. Worth travelling to Denver to see. By foot if neccessary.

3 - The Four Frames, The Glads, The Golden Famile, and Holy Hell. Who else can throw a party with so much attitude?

4 - Dan Melchior's Broke Revue. This set is so clear in my memory that I need time to recall the headline act - Immortal Lee County Killers - who were also fine. Thanks to Heather Hell for intro-ing this artist on the radio - a fave discovery of the year for me.

5 - Dale Morningstar - Bravest one man band performance of the year. I had to change my incorrect first impression that he was "just another college rocker". Hope he got out on time...

6 - The Dictators. Instructive. Fun. Destructive. Judging by past record covers, loosing your hair with age is not always a bad thing.

7 - Werbo + 50 Men @ Blacksheep Inn. The bus ride was half the fun, and recommended to anyone who wants to check out a rock venue in the middle of no-where. Between the great outdoors and the ashtray, best atmosphere of any live venue near Ottawa. Julia picks 50 Men as one of her favourites.

8 - The Sights + Andrew Vincent & Pirates. Can great R n' R get any plainer? Still can't believe I saw them. Bought almost everything they had to sell (vinyl wise) and it's still not enough!

9 - Starvin Hungry vs. Tijuana Bibles. I went primarily to see the Bibles, but the power of the live event beats out the crummy cdr every time. Can't wait to see them again.

10 - One Candle Power w/ Golden Famile and Holy Hell. A great show does not need world class artists on stage. The audience, the venue, and the attitude of all can make a great show happen - and happen it did! One Candle Power raced up the CKCU playlist chart and topped at number two! Welcome our new friends! Special thanks to Music For Cats, my favourite record label in Ottawa, independent or otherwise.

11 - Mr. Pacman. Any band who sports a t-shirt that says "Turbo-Homo" deserves respect; even more so if they try to explain that it is a printers typo and supposed to state "Turbo Hero". They also had (by far) the best merchandise of the year, and the best costumes. Might have to re-think my attitude towards computers and beat boxes.

By the way, you might have noticed that Munly was NOT on stage - if you thought otherwise, that's alright, cause it means you were facing the stage (and not the sound-board, where he was watching from) and that is exactly where you ought to be looking at a live rock and roll event.

Thanks for coming out, and thanks for putting them on.

My only request is that CKCU FM finds an hour in the evening to accomodate a program called Music for Plants, which aired prior Rock the Boat until the host got promoted at her day job. She misses her show.
