| Stephane Therien's favorites of 2001:
Most surprising LP: Rowland S. Howard, "Teenage Snuff Film"
- Howard sounds ominous and disturbed on this excellent double-LP.
Favorite punk LP: The Reds, "Its about time".
Weirdest CD: David Candy, "Play Power"
- Ian Svenonious (The Make Up, Nation of Ulysses) tells you where his favorite places are (museums, there is no pressure to buy anything), his favorite country (Brazil, playfully sexy), and gives you a desert recipe, over '60s style psychedelic-pop.
Craziest CD: Mr. Quintron, "The Unmasked Organ Light-Year of Inifinity Man"
- This nutty one man band (plus yells and puppet show provided by his
partner Miss Pussycat) pounds out fun ditties on his Hammond organ.
Favorite French LP: Les Séquelles, "Et tant pis si cela vous déplaît" -
Great mix of yé yé and garage, even better when Stéphane and Stéphanie trade
off on vocals. Also one of my favorite live shows of 2001 at Bumpers last
September.
Favorite re-issue CD: Les Misérables, "L'intégrale" - If you don't already
know these guys, buy this now ! All of the songs recorded buy this great
Rolling Stones - Pretty Things sounding band from Montréal from the
mid-'60s.
Favorite re-issue LP: The Cramps, "Smell of female" - A great live set,
finally re-issued, on beautiful smello-yello. The sound is amazing ! The
Cramps (with Congo Powers still on guitar) put in a wild set at the
Peppermint Lounge in New York City in 1983. With extra tracks ! They do a
cover of "Faster Pussycat, Kill ! Kill !" What more do you want ?!
Favorite Compilation: Nuggets II - Save up your money and get this ! You
can't go wrong.
Favorite Locals: Mouthpiece, The Glads, Weights and Measures.
