The Slim Cessna Experience
July 26th, 2002 / The Dominion Tavern (and beyond)
Well it finally came to pass at the Dominion on a rare cool July eve. Slim & his Auto Club rolled into town late after being treated shabbily at the border and held up for almost eight hours. Dog tired and a little distracted they managed to settle in and relax with a Dom-home-cooked meal and some pints in plenty of time to witness Casey Comeau and the Halfmilers bellying up to the stage. This band of local luminaries gave us a solid set of their engrossing countrifried surf and garage rock sounds. Lots of good vibes there and we can expect great things from this magnificent ensemble of familiar faces.
Soon the night gave way for Auto Clubbin' and the time of reckoning was at hand. Time to see what the new band changes would bring. Still with a nucleus of Slim, Munly and Dwight from the last time they were here, but now with newcomers Malcolm (drums), Judith Ann (bass) and Reverend Adam Glasseye (pedal steel), there was no sign of unfamiliarity amongst as they comfortably tore into their set, without soundcheck and had the room burnin' in no time flat. Wasting no time, there was plenty of Munly-crowd interaction and the instruments and vocals were revolving furiously, as all came together for an exciting and mind-altering hoedown. The crowd was overjoyed and responsive like almost no other the Tavern has seen. Eventually a totally spent crew of musical genii were able to peel themselves away from the stage. Afterwards Slim, all bleeding from his elbow from yet another infamous stage collision with Munly, apologized for not playin' so well as I patched him up. He proceeded back upstairs and almost passed out and wasn't even able to finish his beer. Thing is, if these guys had a "bad show" and are still ironing out the kinks with the new line-up, imagine what nirvana we are headed towards next time!
Their odyssey continued Saturday, after some much needed rest, as they headed up the 7 for an engagement in Perth at the Stewart Park festival and later the local Curling Club. It was mostly a sparse and polite affair as Perthites probably didn't understand what they were getting'. Slim wished that we all coulda been there for the Curling Club show, they really felt at home and look forward to comin' back to the Dom again soon. We already can hardly wait. - aardvark

Slim Cessna's Auto Club....
When Danny Pants told me on the phone a coupla' months back that Slim Cessna's Auto Club was, accordin' to some, one of America's best live bands, he wasn't kidding! A packed house experienced
first hand the gospel truth of Mr. Pants daring exclamation. I've not seen so many happy faces in a crowd since the Hellacopters were here last. Blowin' the roof off the Dominion, the "Club" roared through a blistering set of country fried, gospel tinged, rockin' songs. If you know their stunning Alternative Tentacles and 3rd full length album, "Always Say Please And Thank You", multiply that by 10 and it can't get no better than that! The album is sweet and live....well, just imagine if you were'nt there! The band makes playing music look so easy. Everyone seemed very adept at a variety of instruments and coupled with a superb vocal presentation it will go down as one thee shows of the year! Simply put, Slim, Danny, Rumley, Ordy, Munly and Dwight can come back and play at my party any time they want! What are you doing next week?
Slim Cessna's LP & CD on Alternative Tentacles called "Always Say Please And Thank You" is available @ BIRDMAN SOUND and was one of our favorite records last year. |
A BRIEF INTERVIEW So most people are unaware of that fact you guys have 3 records under your belt and have been around for a while, and seeing as there is obviously more awareness of roots/country styled music in the underground due to current bandwagons, I think it is probably necessary to point out that Slim Cessna's Auto Club is no "Johnny come lately". How and when did this band get started? It's hard for me to remember exactly when the Auto Club started officially. It may have been 92 or 93. most of the songs from our first record were written in 91. I do know that when we started I had never heard of alt.country, no depression, americana, insurgent, etc...and I never liked the eagles or boring singer songwriters, or that record "sweethearts of the rodeo". We were proud to call ourselves a goddamned great country western band. What kind of influences, musically or otherwise do you draw from? I like country and gospel music. that is the music I grew up with, the music from my folks. What is the local music scene (in Denver) like? Any other bands of note? There seems to be a healthy music scene in Denver. Several good bands. My favorite Denver band "the foggy mountain fuckers", I don't think they're playing anymore. 16HP is a great band and they have been very supportive of us and other Denver bands. Munly is great. You are reputed to be one of the hottest live acts in America right now, how did you come by this claim? Is that what people are saying? We just like to have fun. Are there any other bands that anyone has played with or are there any side projects? Munly has a thing happening that is very good. he has some great records on the W.A.R? label Rumley, Ordy, and Danny play in another Denver band called Tarentella. How did you hook up with Alternative Tentacles? I have known Jello for several years. He is a friend of Bob Ferbrache (the guy who records our records). One day Jello asked if we would be on his label...we said "yes, of course!"
