MORE THAN MEMORY LANE
An interview with Mitch Sidwell of The BUREAUCRATS
The Bureaucrats are one of the original pioneering underground rock bands in Ottawa (and all of Canada for that matter) having set the table back in the late seventies for an eventually burgeoning music scene. A lot has happened around these parts over the years, most has come and gone, but the Bureaucrats, having disbanded prematurely in the early eighties, are making a very noteworthy resurgence. They have recently re-released their rare and highly collectable single "Feel the Pain/Grown up Age" in the form of a FULL LENGTH LP and CD (many extra tracks!!!) to critical acclaim and are getting some of that international attention they so richly deserve(d). What's more is that the Bureaucrats, original line-up intact, will do us one better this July 12th by doing a live concert at the Dominion. It will be their first show in 20 YEARS!!! The Bureaucrats

What can you tell us about the dynamic of starting a "punk" band back in the late 70's? Were you faced with a lot of opposition?

Well the only real opposition was finding a place to play which was soon solved with the opening of the infamous Rotters Club, we all had the same aim.

Obviously you could have been immensely popular in another setting. Given the fact that many would have gone(or stayed) to the U.K. to pursue similar music projects, why did you choose to struggle away in (Ottawa) Canada?

Probably too lazy to get off my arse! Of course, there was a lot going on there already right! and we were having fun here in reasonably unchartered territory. We actually entertained the thought before we all split up.

What influenced you to play your music ? Are there any bands that you could cite as influential?

Yes! British Bands like the Buzzcocks, the Vibrators, the Clash, the Sex Pistols to name a few, I remember seeing the Stranglers back home in 78, the raw energy was something else!

Was there anything at all locally that was inspiring?

Ah well, maybe some bands from Toronto like the Diodes, (Battered) Wives and Teenage Head, it was all just starting off.

What was the state of the Ottawa music scene in those days ?  You must have played with some other similar-minded bands?

As I've said there wasn't much going on until Smithy opened the Rotter's and gave bands like us, the Red Squares and the Action someplace decent to play you had to be a strong cover band back then to even stand a chance!

What were your most memorable and least memorable shows?

Oh! I remember at the University Architecture Bldg, someone billed a "Punk Rock Nite" the sound system was fucked and all these twerps thought great we can spit on the band, well someone gobbed a beauty at the bass player, wrong choice of target! Things started flying around after that, bodies included!

Where did you tour back then ? Was being on the road rewarding ? Did you meet other bands that you could appreciate?

We mostly did the OTT-MONTREAL-TORONTO triangle and had some great fun! Always parties going on when out of town or when others came here to the Rotters to play.

Did you play with any bands that have become known as legendary in their own right?

Remember opening for Bauhaus, the Members, Payolas!!

What do you think of your growing legendary status and the fact that your first single is a highly-sought after item?

Legendary what!! of course it was nice to have a lot of interest in the single after 20 yrs which then enabled us to do the CD and Vinyl, I was quite surprised at the time but I guess if something is worth it, it filters through eventually.

Why did it take so long to get around to releasing a full-length LP ? What kinds of response have you had to it?

Quite good really, there are a lot of people who stick to the old Vinyls and a lot were asking us to put it on vinyl so we did!

Who or what has been the catalyst for getting back on stage after all these years?

Well it must be the next step right! we all got together last year for a few drinks and said next time we are together we should do some playing for old times sakes! John (the Birdman) mentioned the idea when I was down at the Dominion and I said I'll check as everyone is out of Ottawa these days....so it's his fault!

July 12th will certainly be an historical event. How do you see this all playing out?

Looking forward to it, some of the old crowd will turn up I hope and there should be a new crowd, hope they like it, it will be the original line up!
