No News Is Good News

Well here we are as June ends and it’s lookin’ like summer here in Ottawa. 4 Festivals a weekend (and most if not all really quite safe and pedestrian by my count) and of course, more road construction and condo building than you can shake a stick at! Thank God there’s good music being created and released!

Birdman Sound as a store turns 17 this August 1st and by the end of the same month I will have been the host of Friday Morning on CKCU-FM, www.ckcufm.com , 9:30 am to 1 pm for 20 solid years!!!!! Gezuz... the Rawk makes time fly. Hey if the good lord’s willin’ “Friday Morning Cartunes” will be around another 20!!!! The store?, well who knows, I just signed another 3 year lease and costs do go up, but that takes me to 20 years at Birdman one way or the tuther !

On the release front there’s never a dull moment...here’s some of the key picks as of late:

Cloudland Canyon – Lie In Light LP/CD....modern psych/krautrock... Neu comes to mind, Excellent!

Mudhoney – The Lucky Ones LP/CD.....20 years later they still kick a snot encrusted ruckus and have outlasted all who were newcomer saviours from a now, way back...

Motorpsycho - Little Lucid Moments LP/CD ...one of the best rock bands straddling prog, psych, hard rock and pop as always unleash a breath taker. New label, new chapter...Norway Rules

Hellacopters – Head Off LP/CD...I’m sad their off but what a ride and I own every fuckin’ release they did and then some! Cool covers album for bands (contemporaries) they respect and that’s what it’s all about brothers and sisters, Respect The Rock !

Mahogany Frog – Do5 LP/CD....Canada’s long time kings of Prog rule! Live at the Black Sheep weeks ago, showing there is signs of life in rurality...

The Pack – Tin Type LP/CD....already said this when they self released and now Mint done gone and put it on wax with new cover art, but holy fuck I wish they were my little sisters! Proud as it gets with hard as nails blues...a young duo from west coast Canada who are under the influence....

Brant Bjork – Punk Rock Guilt LP/CD....pure unadulterated grooved out stoner hippie rock... It gets no better than this....bust out yer’ Bic dude this bud’s for you...!

Also highly recommended are new (ish) albums from...The Sword, Danava, Farflung, Sharon Krauss, Jerry Teel, Kill Devil Hills, Boris, Black Diamond Heavies, Endless Boogie, Thomas Function and way more , too numerous to mention!....don’t even get me started on the voluminous amount of unbelievable reissues!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Brant Bjork show June 21st was stellar and thanks to all of you for showing the respect for Brant (a true soldier of RAWK) ...We know who you are....absolutely bangin’ !!!! Castor again... the best ever...thanks boys! Look for their new cd...

Four ‘N’ Giv’r are calling it a day.....sadly, our guitarist felt he could not come to the table any longer. I must say as an archivist we had more to do...(another recording would have been cool) We had a good run though I think, and 2 fully realized and solid albums under the belt is more than many bands achieve! Mark McIntyre and myself have already begun rehearsing duo and are already lining up some six string slingers...we’ll keep ya posted !
